While it’s not a requirement to have two Sphynx cats, we highly recommend it! Sphynx cats are social, affectionate, and thrive on companionship. If you have a busy lifestyle or spend long hours away from home, a second Sphynx (or another pet) can provide your cat with a playmate and prevent loneliness or boredom.
Benefits of Having Two Sphynx Cats:
- Companionship: Sphynx cats love to cuddle, and having a feline friend offers constant comfort.
- Mental Stimulation: They engage in play, keeping each other entertained and reducing destructive behaviors.
- Happier Transition: If you’re adopting a kitten, having a second cat can ease the transition into your home.
If you’re not ready for two cats, be sure to spend plenty of time interacting with your Sphynx and provide toys, climbing structures, and stimulation to meet their social and emotional needs.
At Purradox Sphynxery, we also support adopting a rescue cat through our Hearts to Homes Rescue, where the adoption fee is waived if paired with a Sphynx kitten.
Like any breed, Sphynx cats are prone to certain health issues, but responsible breeding and regular veterinary care can minimize risks. At Purradox Sphynxery, we prioritize health by conducting thorough screenings and only breeding cats with clean genetic histories.
Common Health Concerns in Sphynx Cats:
- Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM): A heart condition that can occur in Sphynx cats. Our breeding cats are screened yearly by certified cardiologists to help prevent this.
- Skin Issues: Their hairless skin requires care to avoid oil buildup, acne, and sunburn. Regular cleaning and the right products help keep their skin healthy.
- Respiratory Infections: Due to their lack of fur, Sphynx cats can be more sensitive to temperature changes and drafts.
- Dental Issues: Gum disease and tooth decay can occur if dental hygiene isn’t maintained.
Preventative Measures:
- Regular veterinary checkups
- High-quality nutrition
- Proper grooming and hygiene
- Screening for genetic conditions
At Purradox Sphynxery, all kittens are HCM DNA tested, screened for FeLV/FIV, and provided with a solid health foundation. If you’re considering adopting a Sphynx, we’re here to guide you in providing the best care for your feline companion.

How Long Do Sphynx Cats Live?
Sphynx cats typically live 12 to 15 years, though some can live even longer with proper care. Their lifespan depends on factors such as genetics, diet, environment, and regular veterinary care. At Purradox Sphynxery, we prioritize health screening and ethical breeding practices to give our kittens the best start in life.
Tips for a Long and Healthy Life:
- Regular Vet Checkups: Routine health monitoring helps catch potential issues early.
- Balanced Diet: Feed your Sphynx high-quality cat food for optimal nutrition.
- Grooming & Hygiene: Maintain their skin health by cleaning regularly to prevent oil buildup and infections.
- Indoor Living: Protect your Sphynx from extreme weather and environmental hazards by keeping them indoors.
- Exercise & Enrichment: Provide toys, climbing structures, and playtime to keep them physically and mentally stimulated.
At Purradox Sphynxery, we’re committed to supporting your Sphynx’s health and well-being throughout their life. Check out our Sphynx Cat Care Blog for more tips on raising a happy, healthy companion.
Sphynx cats don’t inherently smell, but their hairless skin can produce oils that may lead to an odor if not properly cared for. Unlike other cats, they lack fur to absorb these natural oils, so regular grooming is essential to keep them clean and fresh.
Why Might a Sphynx Cat Smell?
- Oil Buildup: Excess oils on their skin can cause a slight odor if not cleaned regularly.
- Dirty Ears: Sphynx cats produce more earwax than furry breeds, which can cause a smell.
- Poor Hygiene: If their bedding, litter box, or skin isn’t maintained, odors can develop.
How to Prevent Odors:
- Clean Their Skin: Use a warm, soapy cloth to gently wipe down their skin as needed. Avoid overbathing, as it can increase oil production.
- Regular Ear Cleaning: Check and clean their ears weekly to prevent wax buildup.
- Maintain Hygiene: Wash their blankets and beds often and keep their litter box clean.
At Purradox Sphynxery, we educate all our adopters on proper grooming techniques to ensure your Sphynx stays healthy and odor-free. For more care tips, visit our Sphynx Grooming Blog.
What Is the Rarest Color for a Sphynx Cat?
The rarest colors for Sphynx cats are chocolate and lavender (lilac) due to the specific genetic combinations required to produce them. These colors are the result of recessive genes, meaning both parents must carry the gene for these unique shades to appear in their kittens.
Rare Sphynx Cat Colors:
- Chocolate: A rich, warm brown that stands out as both striking and uncommon.
- Lavender (Lilac): A soft, pale grayish-purple, which is highly coveted by enthusiasts.
- Calico & Tortoiseshell Patterns: Particularly when combined with rare base colors like chocolate or lavender.
- Dominant Blue Eyes (DBE): A specific genetic trait that causes vibrant blue or odd-colored eyes, regardless of coat color.
At Purradox Sphynxery, we’re proud to offer kittens in a wide range of stunning colors, including rare ones like chocolate, lilac, and unique patterns. Our breeding program emphasizes not only beauty but also health and temperament.

Yes, Sphynx cats are considered high maintenance compared to other breeds. Their unique hairless appearance requires regular grooming and specialized care to keep them healthy and comfortable. However, many owners find the extra care worth it for their affectionate and playful nature.
Why Are Sphynx Cats High Maintenance?
- Skin Care: Without fur to absorb oils, their skin needs regular cleaning to prevent oil buildup and acne. Overbathing can lead to increased oil production, so balance is key.
- Temperature Sensitivity: Sphynx cats can get cold easily and may need sweaters or heated beds in cooler climates.
- Ear Cleaning: They produce more earwax than furry cats, so weekly ear cleaning is necessary to prevent buildup.
- Nail Cleaning: Their nails and nail beds can accumulate dirt and oil, requiring frequent cleaning.
- Diet Monitoring: Sphynx cats tend to have high metabolisms and may need a carefully balanced diet to maintain their energy levels and skin health.
Is It Worth It?
Despite the extra care, Sphynx cats reward their owners with incredible companionship. Their affectionate, social nature and unique personality make them a joy to have in any home.
At Purradox Sphynxery, we provide all adopters with detailed care instructions to ensure your Sphynx thrives. For more tips, visit our Sphynx Care Blog.
Yes, it is possible to find hairless cats, like Sphynx, in shelters or rescues, but it’s quite rare. Due to their high demand and specialized care needs, hairless cats are more commonly found through breeders. However, some do end up in shelters or breed-specific rescues due to unforeseen circumstances.
Where to Look for Hairless Cats:
- Breed-Specific Rescues: Organizations like Sphynx rescues or general hairless cat rescues focus on rehoming these unique breeds.
- Local Shelters: Although uncommon, checking shelters periodically can uncover hairless cats in need of homes.
- Pet Adoption Websites: Platforms like Petfinder or Adopt-a-Pet occasionally feature Sphynx or other hairless breeds.
- Social Media Groups: Many communities for Sphynx lovers share adoption opportunities for hairless cats needing homes.
Things to Consider:
- Health Needs: Hairless cats often require more grooming and care than other breeds, so ensure you’re prepared for their unique needs.
- Adoption Fees: Even in shelters, adoption fees for hairless cats can be higher due to their rarity and demand.
At Purradox Sphynxery, we support adoption efforts through our nonprofit, Hearts to Homes Rescue, which occasionally has hairless cats available for adoption. For more details, check out our Adoption Page.

- Intelligent and Curious: Sphynx cats are highly intelligent, making them easy to train and eager to explore their surroundings.
Things to Consider:

- Need for Attention: They don’t like being left alone for long periods and may benefit from a companion pet.

The Sphynx cat originated in Canada in the 1960s. The breed began when a domestic shorthair cat gave birth to a hairless kitten due to a natural genetic mutation. This kitten, named Prune, became the foundation of the Sphynx breed through careful breeding programs that preserved and refined this unique trait.
Key Facts About Sphynx Cat Origins:
- Natural Mutation: The hairlessness in Sphynx cats is the result of a recessive gene mutation.
- Breeding Programs: Breeders in Canada and the United States worked to establish the breed by selectively breeding hairless cats with shorthair cats, maintaining genetic diversity and health.
- Name Inspiration: Despite their name, Sphynx cats are not connected to ancient Egypt but were named for their resemblance to the iconic Egyptian Sphinx statues.
Today, Sphynx cats are recognized by major cat associations like TICA (The International Cat Association) and CFA (Cat Fanciers' Association) as a distinctive breed known for their striking appearance and loving nature.
