Purradox Kitten Care Protocols: Ensuring Healthy Sphynx Kittens

At Purradox Sphynxery, we take pride in raising healthy, happy, and well-socialized Sphynx kittens. Our kitten care protocols ensure that every kitten receives the best possible care from birth until they are ready for their forever homes. In this guide, we’ll share our protocols that cover everything from health testing and vaccinations to feeding, socialization, and hygiene.

1. Health Testing for Breeding Cats

Ensuring the health of our breeding cats is crucial to raising healthy kittens. Before any cat is part of our breeding program, we conduct thorough health tests. This helps us identify and prevent common genetic issues in Sphynx cats.

Key Health Tests We Perform:

  • HCM Screening: We regularly test for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart condition common in Sphynx cats. Early detection helps prevent passing this disease to kittens.
  • FIV and FeLV Testing: Every breeding cat is tested for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). These viruses can impact a cat’s immune system.
  • Regular Vet Visits: Our breeding cats receive routine checkups to ensure they are healthy before breeding and throughout their pregnancy.

We believe that by conducting these tests, we ensure the health of future generations of Sphynx cats.

2. Vaccination Protocol for Kittens

We follow a strict vaccination schedule to protect our kittens from common diseases. Each Sphynx kitten receives at least two rounds of vaccinations before they leave for their new homes.

Our Vaccination Schedule:

  • First Dose at 9 Weeks: At 9 weeks, kittens receive their first FVRCP vaccine. This protects against feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia.
  • Second Dose at 12 Weeks: Kittens get a second FVRCP dose at 12 weeks. This strengthens their immune system.
  • Final Dose at 15 Weeks: If the kitten stays longer, they receive the third FVRCP vaccine at 15 weeks. We may also give a rabies vaccine if required.

By the time our kittens go to their new homes, they are well-protected from common feline illnesses.

3. Socialization and Handling

Proper socialization helps kittens grow into well-adjusted, confident adults. At Purradox, we start socializing our kittens from day one. This process makes them friendly and comfortable in different environments.

How We Socialize Kittens:

  • Daily Handling: We handle each kitten daily, which helps them get used to being touched by humans. This also builds their trust in people.
  • Exposure to Household Sounds: Kittens hear everyday household noises like vacuum cleaners, televisions, and doorbells. This helps prevent noise-related anxiety.
  • Interactions with Other Pets: Our kittens meet other cats and small dogs. This makes it easier for them to adjust if they move into homes with other pets.

Through these steps, our kittens become confident, social, and ready for their new homes.

4. Early Spay/Neuter and Microchipping

All kittens from Purradox Sphynxery are spayed or neutered before they go to their new families. We ensure they weigh at least 3 pounds before the procedure. In addition, every kitten gets a microchip for identification.

Why Early Spaying/Neutering Matters:

  • Prevents Health Issues: Spaying and neutering prevent reproductive cancers and unwanted pregnancies.
  • Improves Behavior: Kittens that are spayed or neutered tend to be calmer and less territorial.
  • Makes Transition Easier: New owners won’t need to schedule surgery. Their kitten is ready to settle in right away.

Microchipping also ensures that if a kitten gets lost, they can be easily identified and returned to their owner.

5. Nutrition and Feeding

We believe in providing a balanced diet for all our kittens. At Purradox, we feed our kittens a mix of Hill’s Science Diet dry kibble and wet food. This combination ensures they get the nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy.

Our Feeding Routine:

  • Dry Kibble Available All Day: Kittens have access to dry kibble at all times. This ensures they can eat when they feel hungry and supports healthy weight gain.
  • Wet Food 2–3 Times Daily: Wet food provides extra hydration and protein. We offer it a few times a day to supplement their diet.
  • Fresh Water at All Times: We ensure kittens always have fresh water to stay hydrated.

Following this feeding protocol helps our kittens develop strong muscles, healthy coats, and lots of energy for play.

6. Litter Training and Grooming

Before our kittens leave for their new homes, they are fully litter trained and familiar with basic grooming. We start early to ensure they learn good habits.

Steps for Litter Training:

  • Step 1: We begin with non-clumping litter to prevent kittens from accidentally swallowing it.
  • Step 2: As they grow, we transition to clumping litter. This makes cleaning easier and prepares them for their new homes.
  • Step 3: At around 2.5 pounds, we introduce the Litter Robot. If the new family uses this system, the kittens are already familiar with it.

Grooming is also an important part of their routine. We give regular baths, clean their ears, and trim their nails. Sphynx cats need regular grooming due to their hairless nature, and we make sure they are comfortable with these activities from an early age.

Conclusion

At Purradox Sphynxery, we follow a detailed set of kitten care protocols to ensure every Sphynx kitten we raise is healthy, happy, and well-prepared for their new homes. From health testing and vaccinations to socialization and proper nutrition, we take every step to give our kittens the best start in life. When you adopt a Purradox Sphynx kitten, you can feel confident that they’ve received top-tier care.
